Message to Summer 2020 Students
We can imagine how disappointed you may be feeling about the cancellation of your Summer 2020 study abroad program. You have probably been planning to study abroad program for a long time. The Study Abroad Office is here to support you with next steps.
Yes, this is a final decision. Even if the CDC warning is reversed, there are no plans to reinstate Summer 2020 programs. Due to the amount of logistical planning required to execute our programs, we cannot reinstate Summer programs at a later date.
Yes! The Study Abroad Office can transfer your application so that you will be considered for programs in future terms, provided the program is still accepting applications and there is currently space available. Contact your study abroad advisor for assistance.
The $50 application fee is non-refundable. If you change your study abroad enrollment to a future semester or summer, you will not be charged a second application fee. This fee supports the expense of maintaining an online application system and the process of application review. Applicants for study abroad in Summer 2020 will not be charged the study abroad administrative fee ($925).
The decision to cancel all Summer 2020 UNC study abroad programs also applies to UNC-approved programs operated through third-party providers, such as IES, DIS, API, CET, and others. If you enroll in a study abroad program this summer, the Study Abroad Office cannot provide host institution approval, and the office cannot assist you with credit transfer to UNC.
UNC Summer School registration opened on March 16, so students should proceed with registration for summer classes. Consult with your academic advisor if you have any questions about summer on-campus registration.
If you have been awarded a scholarship for summer study abroad through the Study Abroad Office, there is a possibility you may be able to use all or part of the scholarship for a Fall 2020 semester study abroad program. This will depend on your fall study abroad program costs and any scholarship stipulations associated with your specific award. Feel free to reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
You will not be able to apply your summer study abroad scholarship(s) toward programs beginning in Spring 2021 or after. You can certainly reapply for Study Abroad Office Scholarships through the Common Scholarship Application for future study abroad programs.
Study Abroad scholarships are awarded specifically for study abroad programs, and not for on-campus study.
If you have been awarded a scholarship through an academic department, Honors Carolina, or another school, please reach out to those units for information.
Study Abroad advising appointments, info sessions, and meetings will be held virtually for the foreseeable future. Please email your study abroad advisor to arrange a Zoom or phone appointment, or schedule an appointment online.
