Study Abroad Office Scholarships
The UNC Study Abroad Office administers a number of scholarship funds specifically for study abroad. These awards are primarily, but not exclusively, need-based and originate from both endowed scholarship funds and from monetary gifts to a Study Abroad Awards fund.
We strongly encourage you to have a look at the numerous scholarship opportunities available.
The UNC Study Abroad Office administers the awards on this page. For additional scholarship opportunities, review the Other Funding Sources page. It is never too early to start planning!
Common Scholarship Application
Students can be considered for multiple awards by completing the Study Abroad Scholarships Common Application during the application cycle for your study abroad program. You will be automatically considered for any scholarship funds for which you qualify.
Scholarships with Specific Applications
Each of these scholarships requires a separate application. Follow the links to open the scholarship page and apply. You should apply during the application cycle for your prospective study abroad program.
Due to a generous endowment from Harris Teeter, Inc., the UNC Study Abroad office is offering students an opportunity to apply for scholarships of at least $2000 to offset the cost of a summer, semester, or yearlong Study Abroad program.
All qualified applicants from the State of North Carolina are eligible for consideration. Preference will be given to students who are Harris Teeter associates or children of Harris Teeter associates. The purpose of these scholarships is to enable the participation in Study Abroad programs of UNC students who would not otherwise be able to afford this option. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.
Alumnus John Jackson Sechler of Cornwall, England, established the fund supporting these awards in 2013 to honor his mother. The fund offers need-based scholarships for semester or year-long exchange programs in England, with preference for students who plan to enroll in classes related to their major or who will pursue an internship or formal service-learning course while in England.
The Phillips Ambassadors program was established in 2005 with a generous gift from alumnus Earl N. “Phil” Phillips Jr. of Chapel Hill, a business executive and former U.S. Ambassador to the Eastern Caribbean, and his family.
This scholarship, given annually to 25 to 50 students, combines a financial award for a study abroad program in Asia with an academic course that puts the experience in a greater global context.
