Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I chose this program to learn chinese and immerse myself in the local culture to enhance my learning experience, especially to explore my cultural identity. I specifically chose CET Taiwan because this is a 10 week study abroad which is longer than a typical 8-week program which can maximize my time abroad.
What did you learn about yourself?
I learned that I really had to grow out of my comfort zone. Back home, I might be shy and quiet, but abroad, in order to make meaningful connections and interact with the local culture, I had to put myself out there. Be the first one to ask questions, practice a new language, learn by example from the locals.
What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
Traveling to Kao Hsiung, Taiwan. I saw many local landmarks and very beautiful sceneries such as the Lotus Pond Lake or 蓮池潭, which had many pagodas and temples around the circumference of the lake which had vibrant lotus flowers. I also explored the nearby island of Xiao Liu Qiu or 小琉球 which is famous for its beaches and sea turtles.
What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
Find language exchange events, local campus clubs, or even go out partying and attend as many social events as possible. You’ll be lonely once you arrive in your study abroad university, create your own opportunities to meet new people. Carpe Diem!
How do you identify?
