Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I chose to take this experience to study abroad because I wanted the opportunity to meet people from across the world, expand my understanding and appreciation of other countries, and immerse myself in a culture that is very different from my own. I have always loved traveling and wanted to do so once I was older, but this experience allowed me to live in another country for 6 weeks compared to simply being a tourist. While Europe is a relatively common travel destination that I hoped to visit when I'm older, I did not foresee myself visiting Asia due to the time it takes to travel here. As such, I saw this opportunity as a potentially once in a life time experience to learn about the many different Asian cultures first hand. I chose this location specifically because of my appreciation for Korean TV and film, as well as the opportunity to learn more about the political standing between North and South Korea. Korea University is one of the 3 best universities in South Korea and is well known for its psychology program, which I study. Additionally, KU offers a variety of cultural activities and sponsors a buddy program which helps students of the international summer campus connect with peers and local KU students who help guide students in their transition to life in Seoul.

What did you learn about yourself?
This was without a doubt a life changing experience for me which taught me so much about who I am and who I want to be. During covid and in the years following, I often felt a sense of aimlessness and like I had lost myself during the pain and isolation of that time. In Seoul, I found myself again and for that I will be eternally grateful to this country, its citizens, and all of the amazing people I met there.

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
I have made many of the best memories of my life and have met some amazing people from around the world while in this program. One day, I went on my own to Myeongdong with the goal of exploring the area and visited Namdaemun Market, Seoul Comic Street, Myeongdong Catholic Cathedral, and Namsan tower. This day encapsulates two of my favorite things about Seoul. First, Seoul is an incredibly safe and even as a woman traveling on her own, I never felt uncomfortable or unsafe in the entirety of my trip. Second, there are infinite things to do in Seoul for all types of interests including history, culture, food/cooking, art, shopping, and just about anything else you can imagine. Another favorite memory of mine: A North Korean defector gave a speech at KU to discuss the reality of life in North Korea, her decision to defect, and how her life is now in South Korea. Many students gathered to listen to her talk and afterwards about 20 students gathered for a picnic on the quad. The buddy program leaders brought food for everyone and taught us a few Korean games for us to play as a group. While eating I got to know several new people including a girl from the UK who ended up becoming one of my favorite travel/exploring buddies. We stayed on the quad chatting and playing games until the sun had set. This was such a fun experience and a memory I know will stay with me for the rest of my life.

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
Uncertainties are a natural part of stepping out of your comfort zone so try your best to accept the anxieties you are feeling without letting them control you. On my first day in Seoul, I had a momentary, overpowering feeling of absolute unpreparedness and fear. I knew that I could let this feeling control me and ruin this once in a lifetime experience, or I could let it go and accept the uncertainty as a part of my experience. To students who are feeling afraid and uncertain, get up and do something. Keeping your brain busy by walking, exploring, or meeting up with friends is the best way to not let these feelings overpower you. You were brave enough to take the leap and go on this journey and you are strong enough to beat these feelings. I wish you the best of luck and hope your experience is as wonderful and life changing as mine. *Side note, feel free to reach out to me before or during your trip if you have any questions or want any advice!
