About My Study Abroad Program

Major/Minor: Biology Major
Program: Freie Universität Berlin International Summer and Winter University
Location: Berlin, Germany
Email: rbridenh@ad.unc.edu
Term: Summer 2023

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I chose to study abroad to expand my horizons and experience a truly different culture. I also wanted the chance to test my foreign language skills that I had been learning here at Carolina. I selected my program by talking with both professors and advisors for the German department, as well as looking through the Heels Abroad website.

What did you learn about yourself?
I learned how much I really want to travel the rest of the world to experience everything that I can. I also realized how much I really love my home.

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
My favorite memory is exploring Berlin after the first day of class and eventually getting lost with a bunch of my new friends. Finding our way home while taking in new sights in a foreign country was a truly fun experience.

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
Face them head on, don't shy away from your problems or experiences that are out of your comfort zone. You're in a new place and should experience new things.

How do you identify?
Covenant Scholars, Scholarship Recipient

Is there any advice you would give to other students who share your identity?
Apply for scholarships, there are plenty of scholarships offered by different departments at UNC for specific regions or experiences.
