Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I wanted to study abroad to gain a new perspective and challenge myself socially and mentally. I chose this program because I wanted to study abroad early in my collegiate career. The Carolina Global Launch Program was a great take to take Gen-Ed classes and not have to worry about fulfilling specific class requirements, which deters many people from studying abroad later. I also wanted to do this program because I would be going with a cohort of other UNC freshmen; we all became super close during the program and are still best friends to this day. I chose to study in Spain because I wanted a relaxed way of life, gain Spanish proficiency, and live with a host family.

What did you learn about yourself?
I learned how to be a great problem solver through this experience. Small problems such as finding my way to class, missing my bus, or navigating the markets were more difficult to solve with the language barrier. As time went on, I creatively found ways to solve my issues and feel more comfortable. It required patience, effort, and planning but I am a more adaptable individual because of it. I also learned how to enjoy myself in unknown and uncomfortable situations, especially when I first arrived in Spain. Living with a host family, I was forced to communicate in a language that was unnatural for me, which at first felt impossible. As my language abilities strengthened, my relationship with my host grandparents flourished.

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
My favorite memory was when my entire cohort hiked to the top of a hill that overlooked the entire city of Granada. We had a picnic, listened to music, and hung out with locals. This was the moment where I felt like Granada was home. Although it was not the most exciting moment I had abroad, I was found comfort and happiness thousands of miles away from home.

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
Students who may face uncertainties while they're abroad should know that they're better prepared than they think. Almost every situation is solvable and should not deter them from having a great time when you're abroad. I also think its super important to make time for your friends and family at home, because they are also a great support structure. Ultimately, you will learn the most about yourself in uncertain situations. So, study abroad students should keep trying new things even if it's hard.
