About My Study Abroad Program

Major/Minor: Journalism/Information Systems
Program: UNC in Firenze
Location: Firenze, Italia
Email: abbymou@live.unc.edu
Term: Spring 2019

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I was looking for a program in Europe that required no language prerequisites. I had been to Italy before and particularly loved their culture, so the UNC in Firenze program fit perfectly.

What did you learn about yourself?
I learned that I am fiercely independent and require an elevated level of adventure in my life to feel fulfilled. I learned that I love being immersed in different cultures, even if I feel uncomfortable being an outcast. I learned that I love to write and share my experiences.

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
One of my favorite memories occurred while I was in London when I doing my first solo trip. I was in one of the largest cities in the world, thousands of miles from home, and I happened to run into one of my friends from Charlotte. It was an unbelievable coincidence that I will always cherish.

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
Be bold and think outside your comfort zone. Some of the best memories and feelings will come from experiences that push you to be your more courageous self.

Would you do it again?
Absolutely

How did your study abroad experience prepare you for your future career?
Because of my time abroad, I have decided to seek internship and employment opportunities abroad. Specifically, I am looking for opportunities in London to further my global exposure.

How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at UNC?
My classes at Lorenzo de' Medici placed far more emphasis on the midterm and final. Most of my grade stemmed from these examinations rather than classwork or projects.

How do you identify?
LGBTQ+
