About My Study Abroad Program
Major/Minor: Southern Studies, English/Comparative Literature
Program: UNC Chapel Hill Honors Study Abroad
Location: London, England
Term: Spring 2019
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I wanted to live and work in London, and this program provided me with an invigorating academic experience, as well as an eye-opening internship experience, which was the cherry on top of a wonderful semester in London.
What did you learn about yourself?
I learned that I like the big city, because there are so many places to explore and wander around. I also learned about what potential career options I may want to consider.
What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
Watching the sunset and seeing the deer up close in Richmond Park
What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
Pick a place you want to explore, and take all the time you can to wander. Get away from the touristy sites and go find where the locals hang out: what museums, shops, and parks they go to, what they like to do for fun. It'll disguise the fact that you are a tourist and make your explorations much more organic.
Would you do it again?
In a heartbeat.
How did your study abroad experience prepare you for your future career?
I learned that I may want to explore careers in a museum or art gallery, or that I may want to pursue being a full-time writer.
How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at UNC?
The ability to see the works you are studying in person, rather than on a projector screen or textbook, is worth the whole world in classes where examples are the meat of the course. Seeing those paintings, buildings, and locations helps immensely to understand them.
