About My Study Abroad Program

Major/Minor: Spanish Lit and Culture, Biology
Program: University of Melbourne
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Email: arwen@email.unc.edu
Term: Fall 2022

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I fell in love with Melbourne when I was originally applying to colleges, but for cost reasons, I couldn't attend the University of Melbourne full-time. I selected this program to have the opportunity to experience Melbourne and a different academic style, without having to pay extraordinary amounts.

What did you learn about yourself?
I learned just how much I value independence. UNC is in my hometown, so I've never been more than 15 miles from home for any extended period of time. Being able to exercise my independence without the safety net of my parents living nearby was really nice. Not being reliant on my parents -- to take me places, to tell me where to go or what to do, to give me advice -- was a really valuable experience, one I hope to repeat in the near future.

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
My friends and I would do "hot chocolate nights" -- after a day out and about in the city or its suburbs, Jay would make hot chocolate, we would grab our snacks and blankets and PJs, and we would watch a movie or talk or do trivia. Those nights were my favorites.

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
People are, fundamentally, kind. Moreover, people are fascinated by strangers and people visiting from another country -- you'll meet so many friendly strangers, some of whom will become your closest friends. If you ever need help or are uncertain, you can rely on the goodness of humanity and just ask -- someone from the university you're going to, or a UNC representative, or even a stranger or the US Embassy. They will gladly help you.
