Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I decided to study abroad primarily because of my longstanding desire to venture beyond the boundaries of home and experience a college education in a different setting. The idea of exploring new horizons and immersing myself in diverse cultures has always intrigued me. However, as I went through the college application process and delved into financial considerations, I realized that pursuing an education outside of North Carolina would be financially unfeasible. Then I came across the Carolina Global Launch program at UNC. This program offered first-year students like myself the chance to spend their first semester abroad, allowing us to experience a new environment while still being connected to UNC; it offered a perfect blend of exploration and familiarity. Additionally, the financial aspect played a pivotal role in my choice. By participating in the Carolina Global Launch program, I could realize my dream of studying abroad without the hefty costs linked to out-of-state tuition. In essence, my decision to study abroad stemmed from a desire to embrace novel experiences and step beyond my comfort zone. Through this program, I have been able to explore life beyond my state's borders while still having the security of returning to a top-tier university, all without subjecting myself to an unrealistic financial strain. This decision has enriched my college journey beyond imagination, broadening my worldview and molding me into a more multifaceted individual.

What did you learn about yourself?
One of the most valuable lessons I learned from this experience was the significance of alleviating the self-imposed weight of having every facet of my life intricately mapped out. I came to appreciate the value of affording myself the liberty to realize that there exists no obligation to accomplish or fulfill everything within a confined time frame. Grasping the notion that life's chronology isn't bound by a linear trajectory, I unearthed the importance of pausing and genuinely immersing myself in the present. This experience unveiled that there's no rush to hastily embrace a career or establish a family; instead, I'm entitled to wholeheartedly explore all my passions and interests.

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
One of my most cherished memories from my program is not a solitary incident but rather a recurring tradition. During my study abroad experience, our group established a weekly custom, which revolved around a local Irish establishment nestled within the bustling streets of Spain. Nearly every Thursday night, we congregated at this establishment to partake in animated rounds of karaoke. Imagine almost 40 students assembling in this snug Irish pub; it could become rather cramped. Nevertheless, those Thursday nights evolved into the highlight of my week. They provided a sense of unity, dispelled homesickness, and offered a chance to connect with people from around the world who shared their stories and perspectives. This simple tradition encapsulated the essence of my study abroad journey - stepping out of my comfort zone, forging connections, and embracing diverse experiences.

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
My advice to future students navigating uncertainties abroad is to avoid comparing with others back home. Immerse yourself in the local culture, explore your interests, and embrace all the new experiences presented in front of you.
