Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I chose to study abroad because I wanted to find an enriching experience that would take me out of my comfort zone. Studying abroad offered me the unique opportunity to truly broaden my education outside of UNC’s campus. While walking around the study abroad fair, I came across the Istituto Lorenzo de’ Medici table and immediately knew I had found my program. I was intrigued by all of the diverse courses they offered and was fascinated at the opportunity to study abroad in such a special city.

What did you learn about yourself?
Through my time in Italy, I learned how adaptable I was and to not fear change. Before my study abroad, I always felt the need to plan my days and enjoyed following a routine, but this experience taught me to also embrace the unknown. I found a love for doing things independently, and learned not to shy away from things that may scare me.

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
My most cherished memory from my study abroad in Florence, Italy, occurred at the beginning of my trip. One evening, my roommates and I went to the Piazzale Michelangelo, a square that overlooks a panoramic view of the city of Florence. As I watched the sun go down and the skyline twinkle from a distance, I felt like all my worries completely vanished. My friends and I spent an hour watching the breathtaking view and getting to know each other better, and I think it was truly one of the fundamental parts of my trip. I later finished my study abroad back at the Piazzale Michelangelo, to say goodbye to the beautiful city that gave me so many of my favorite memories and some of my best friends.

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
At first, it can feel intimidating to be in a completely new environment, but embrace it! Find the beauty in everything you do, whether that be getting lost in the city or trying new foods, truly immerse yourself in this different lifestyle and culture. Remind yourself of the limited time you have to make the most of such an incredible opportunity, so engage in your classes and meet new people. Work hard, stay safe and have fun! You will make lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories through your study abroad, so cherish every moment.
