About My Study Abroad Program

Major/Minor: Chemistry
Program: UNC Science in Dublin
Location: Dublin, Ireland
Email: alishade@live.unc.edu
Term: Summer 2019

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I wanted to study abroad to gain new life experiences and explore parts of the world I had never seen. I chose this program because it allowed me to study abroad while also fulfilling a major requirement.

What did you learn about yourself?
I learned a lot about being independent and taking chances. I was in a new environment with people I had never met before and taking an incredibly challenging course, but I left with many new friends, a new understanding of chemistry, and a feeling that Dublin would always be a home away from home.

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
One of my favorite memories from the program was being able to travel with my friends and explore new places together. I went to London with two of my friends for our last weekend. It was so fun to take a break from classes and have a fun weekend exploring a new city.

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
I would just say, don't be nervous, all the other students are in the same position as you and don't be afraid to get out of your comfort zone.

Would you do it again?
Yes! Absolutely.

How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at UNC?
Taking a chemistry class abroad allowed me to be in a small classroom with about 20 students. This was incredibly beneficial as it allowed me to have a close relationship with my fellow students and professor and allowed me to get individual help, rather than being in a class of 200+ students.
