Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I chose to study abroad because I desired an experience that brought me out of my comfort zone. I have lived in Chapel Hill for 8 years, and never really felt the exposure of leaving my home and living completely independently. Studying abroad allowed me this experience, which I am incredibly thankful for because it has let me grow significantly.
What did you learn about yourself?
I have learned that I am capable of not just living, but flourishing independently in a foreign country. It is definitely scary and nerve-racking, but the experience has permitted me to really take a step forward in my growth, and I am so incredibly privileged to have that opportunity.
What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
One of my favorite memories from both programs is when the UNC in Montpellier group visited the Pont du Gard: a massive roman aqueduct. It was an unbelievable site, which was enhanced by my love for Ancient Roman histor.
What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
I advise future study abroad students to take risks, and to put yourself out there. You will not gain the experience you desire unless you put the effort in. It may be frightening, or exhausting at times, but you will be absolutely be satisfied by the end.
