Location: Florence, Italy
Email: juaaug20@ad.unc.edu
Term: Summer 2023, session 2

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I chose to study abroad because I enjoy traveling and experiencing different cultures, so I thought that studying abroad would be a good way to learn about Italian culture. I selected my program by researching study abroad programs that took place in Italy.

What did you learn about yourself?
Through this experience I have learned to take risks and get out of my comfort zone. Traveling to and living in a new country alone was daunting and scary at first, but I quickly became acclimated to life in Florence. For example, before studying abroad, the thought of traveling around Europe without my family would have frightened me. I stepped out of my comfort zone once arriving in Florence and starting my program which allowed me to do things such as travel during my weekends abroad.

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
My favorite memory from my study abroad was going to Capri, Italy with everyone in my program (API). We explored the island and swam in the ocean.

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
I would advise future students who face uncertainties during their time abroad to remember that they're not alone and there are many other study abroad students in their program having the same feelings/ experiences as them. I would also recommend that they keep in touch with their family during these times.
