American Studies
Departmental Reviewer: Gabrielle Berlinger,

When filling out a new course request, please list the specific requirement you are trying to earn credit for. For example, History and Social Science course within the American Studies-Southern Studies Concentration.

American Studies encourage all majors and minors—in all five of our areas of concentration (American Studies, American Indian and Indigenous Studies, Folklore, Southern Studies, Global American Studies)—to gain global perspectives through study abroad. Students who wish to receive credit for study abroad may do so only on officially sanctioned UNC–Chapel Hill programs. Courses taken abroad may contribute to AMST major requirements.

Furthermore, offered exclusively to American Studies majors and minors, the Julia Preston Brumley Scholarship honors the memory of a UNC graduate who was raised in Chapel Hill and was passionate about traveling abroad. American Studies majors and minors are encouraged to apply for the Julia Preston Brumley scholarship — a $3,000 award that will help off-set the cost of studying abroad for a summer, semester, or an academic year.

Please visit our departmental page for more on study abroad opportunities and procedures (see link below).
