Academics Abroad (draft July 2020)

Academics Abroad

The great thing about studying abroad is that the courses you take can count toward major, minor, general education, or elective credit.

General Requirements for Study Abroad Enrollment:

  • You must take courses abroad for a grade, not pass/fail, at your host institution.
  • You must enroll in the equivalent of 12-18 UNC credit hours per semester. You may transfer a maximum of 18 credit hours per semester abroad.
  • Summer enrollment may be 3 UNC credit hours or more, depending on your program (note: 4 credit hours is considered ‘full time’ for summer).

Credit Hour and Grading Scale Guide

Check out the Credit Hour and Grade Scale Conversion Guide to learn how grades and credits are calculated on your study abroad program.

Earning Credit for Study Abroad Coursework

Many courses taken abroad will count as transfer credit upon your return to UNC. With careful planning with Academic Advising and your Study Abroad Advisor, you can apply this credit towards your degree requirements at UNC!

Fall 2020 and All Terms Prior

If you studied abroad in Fall 2020 or earlier, please follow these credit transfer instructions.

Spring 2021 and All Terms Forward

If you studied abroad in Spring 2021 or later, please follow these transfer credit instructions.

Due to the cancellation of Summer 2020 programs as a result of COVID-19, the Study Abroad Office will not be able to process and transfer credit requests for this term. Even if approval was received prior to the announcement that Summer 2020 programs were cancelled, the credit cannot be processed by UNC Study Abroad.
