Visa & Immigration

International exchange students will apply for a J-1 Non-Degree student visa.

Details

This visa will allow you to enter the US up to 30 days prior to the program start date listed on your Form DS-2019, which will be the first day of classes for the semester per the University’s academic calendar. You must depart the US within 30 days after the program end date listed on your Form DS-2019, which will be the last day of the final exam period for the semester.

You will be prompted to submit the required documents to request a Form DS-2019 in the ISSS Portal, which will be reviewed and approved by International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). The online application in the ISSS Portal provides information regarding the criteria that must be met to obtain J-1 status and instructs students on how to request the DS-2019 form “Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status” from ISSS.

The processing time can take 2-4 weeks. Upon approval, the Form DS-2019 will be mailed to you which is required to schedule the visa appointment. It is important that you submit the required documents to request the Form DS-2019 in a timely manner to avoid delays in the visa application process. You will be able to submit the documents required by ISSS only after your official admission is processed in the University’s system. Additional information regarding the process to request the Form DS-2019 in the ISSS Portal, as well as the next steps in the process, can be found on the ISSS website.

Before leaving your home country, confirm that your passport and visa are still valid for entry into the United States. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond the date of your expected stay.
