Scholarships for Specific UNC Academic Programs




Michael L. and Matthew L. Boyatt Award

Alumnus Michael Boyatt of Durham established this award in 1996 with his son, alumnus Matthew, also of Durham. This merit award funds study abroad by undergraduates majoring in Global Studies or History.


The Julia Preston Brumley Fund

The Julia Preston Brumley Fund shall provide support to students in American Studies who are participating in a semester or summer study abroad program approved by the Department of American Studies and the Office of Study Abroad.

Recipients, known as Julia Preston Brumley Scholars, are selected by a committee comprised of faculty from the Department of American Studies.


Carolina Center for Jewish Studies

Several endowments created by alumni and friends of the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies support a range of scholarship in the field of Jewish studies, including fieldwork at the Huqoq archaeological excavation site in Israel.

Endowments that have recently supported undergraduate students participating in fieldwork at Huqoq include the Howard R. Levine Student Excellence Fund in Jewish Studies, the Jerry and Huddy Cohen Excellence Fund, the Harvey Colchamiro Endowment Fund, the Fund for Jewish Studies and a fund supported by anonymous donors.


The Elizabeth Malone Roughton Study Abroad Scholarship

Due to a generous endowment in honor of Elizabeth Malone Roughton, UNC-CH Dramatic Art students have the opportunity to apply for a $5,000 scholarship to help offset the cost of a study abroad program. Scholarship recipients must be accepted to an approved study abroad program in Dublin, Ireland to study Dramatic Art. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.




Scholarships for Specific Study Abroad Programs




The Christopher Mead Armitage and Pauline Brooks Armitage Scholarship for Visiting Students

The Christopher Mead Armitage and Pauline Brooks Armitage Scholarship for Visiting Students is a scholarship opportunity for students accepted to the Visiting Student Program at Oxford University, St Edmund Hall. The scholarship will cover the cost of tuition, housing, and most meals for the Michaelmas term at St Edmund Hall. The scholarship may be awarded to one UNC-CH undergraduate student in the Arts and Humanities each year. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.


Alva Ebersole Award

This award supports students with financial need in the UNC in Sevilla semester or summer programs, established by the Department of Romance Studies.




Scholarships for Programs in Specific Locations




The Bejarano-Benning Scholarships for Latin America

Due to a generous endowment from Leslie C. Benning and Dr. Rafael Bejarano-Narbona, the UNC-CH Study Abroad office is offering an opportunity to apply for scholarships of at least $500 to offset the cost of a summer, semester, or yearlong Study Abroad program in Latin America.

Preference will be given to students who are interested in pursuing careers in international business, medicine, or public health, especially those individuals focused on improving the education and/or healthcare of women.

The purpose of these scholarships is to enable the participation in Study Abroad programs of UNC students who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.


The Bejarano-Benning Scholarships for Spain/Iberian Peninsula

Due to a generous endowment from Leslie C. Benning and Dr. Rafael Bejarano-Narbona, the UNC Study Abroad office is offering an opportunity to apply for scholarships of at least $500 to offset the cost of a semester or yearlong Study Abroad program in Spain or Portugal.

Preference will be given to students who are interested in pursuing careers in international business, medicine, or public health, especially those individuals focused on improving the education and/or healthcare of women.

The purpose of these scholarships is to enable the participation in Study Abroad programs of UNC students who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.


Fry Family Study Abroad Scholarship

This need-based scholarship is intended for students wishing to study abroad in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.


The Anthony and Hope Harrington Scholarships

Due to a generous endowment from Anthony Harrington, the UNC-CH Study Abroad office is offering an opportunity to apply for scholarship of at least $1000 to offset the cost of a summer, semester, or yearlong Study Abroad program.

This award is limited to students participating in programs in Latin America. The purpose of these scholarships is to enable the participation in Study Abroad programs of UNC students who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.


The Lineweaver Scholarships for Latin America

Due to a generous endowment from Grey Watkins Lineweaver, the UNC-CH Study Abroad office is offering an opportunity to apply for scholarships of at least $500 to offset the cost of a summer, semester, or yearlong Study Abroad program in Latin America.

No preference will be given to a student’s major, or class level. The purpose of these scholarships is to enable the participation in Study Abroad programs of UNC students who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.


The Lan Ma and Gang Pei Study Abroad Scholarship Fund

This scholarship, funding through the generosity of Lan Ma, Gang Pei, and Friends, seeks to provide study abroad scholarships to undergraduate students to participate in College approved study abroad programs in Mainland China, with a preference for semester-long programs. Students participating in summer programs or options in Hong Kong may also apply.




Scholarships Based on North Carolina Residency Options




The Jan and Steve Capps Study Abroad Ambassador Scholarship

Due to a generous endowment from Jan and Steve Capps, the UNC Study Abroad office offers this scholarship to offset the cost of semester or yearlong Study Abroad programs. First consideration will be given to students with demonstrated financial need from Dare, Hertford, Martin, Nash, and Northampton Counties, followed by students from the remaining North Carolina counties with demonstrated financial need.

No preference will be given to a student’s major, class level, or chosen Study Abroad program. These awards were created to enable those UNC students, who would not otherwise be able to afford this option, the opportunity to participate in Study Abroad programs.

Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.


The Joe Henry and Jenny C. Jenkins Scholarships

Due to a generous endowment in honor of Joe Henry and Jenny C. Jenkins, the UNC Study Abroad office is offering an opportunity to apply for scholarships to offset the cost of a summer, semester, or year long Study Abroad program. First consideration will be given to students with demonstrated financial need from Bertie, Dare, and Hertford counties.

Secondary consideration will be given to students with demonstrated financial need from Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Gates, Halifax, Hyde, Martin, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrell counties and from the twenty-seven remaining eastern counties of North Carolina: Beaufort, Bladen, Brunswick, Carteret, Columbus, Craven, Cumberland, Duplin, Edgecombe, Greene, Harnett, Hoke, Johnston, Jones, Lenoir, Nash, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, Pender, Pitt, Robeson, Sampson, Scotland, Washington, Wayne, and Wilson.

No preference will be given to a student’s major, class level, or chosen Study Abroad program. The purpose of these scholarships is to enable the participation in Study Abroad programs of UNC students who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester. Students from counties not given first consideration for this award are encouraged to apply, as even if they are not selected from this pool, they will be considered for all other awards for which they qualify.


The Charles Garland Johnson Scholarships

Due to a generous endowment from Charles Garland Johnson, Sr. and his family, the UNC Study Abroad office is offering an opportunity to apply for a scholarship to offset the cost of a summer, semester, or yearlong Study Abroad program.

First consideration will be given to students with demonstrated financial need from Surry, Wilkes, and Yadkin Counties, followed by students from the remaining North Carolina counties with demonstrated financial need. No preference will be given to a student’s major, class level, or chosen Study Abroad program.

These awards were created to enable those UNC students, who would not otherwise be able to afford this option, the opportunity to participate in Study Abroad programs.

Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

The Leonard G. and Rozelia S. Herring Study Abroad Award

Due to a generous endowment from Leonard G. and Rozelia S. Herring, the UNC Study Abroad office is offering an opportunity to apply for scholarships to offset the cost of a semester or yearlong Study Abroad program.

Preference will be given to recipients of the Leonard G. and Rozelia S. Herring Scholarship or the Albert Lee Herring Memorial Scholarship Fund. The purpose of these scholarships is to enable the participation in Study Abroad programs of UNC students who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.


The Charles Aycock McLendon, Sr. Study Abroad Scholarship

Due to a generous endowment from Charles Aycock McLendon, Jr., the UNC Study Abroad office is offering an opportunity to apply for scholarships of at least $1000 to offset the cost of a summer, semester, or yearlong Study Abroad program.

The purpose of these scholarships is to enable the participation in Study Abroad programs of UNC students who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.


Frances and E.T. Rollins Jr. Study Abroad Scholarship

Frances Rollins of Durham established this fund in 2008 in honor of her late husband, a UNC graduate and a former owner, board chairman and publisher of The Herald-Sun in Durham. The fund provides scholarships for students with financial need and academic merit.


The Horace J. Shumate Memorial Fund

Due to a generous endowment from Carol Shumate, the UNC Study Abroad office is offering an opportunity to apply for scholarships of at least $1250 to offset the cost of a summer, semester, or yearlong Study Abroad program.

Preference will be given to students who demonstrate how their intended study abroad program permits them to explore new academic or personal adventures, challenges, or language skills, to study about and in geographic regions that are unfamiliar, or to pursue issues or subjects outside their main course of study at Carolina but which realize a specific academic or personal objective.

The purpose of these scholarships is to enable the participation in Study Abroad programs of UNC students who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.
