Alva Ebersole Award

This scholarship was established to help undergraduate students participate in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs in a Romance Language.

First consideration will be given to students majoring in Spanish.

Award amounts vary based on available funds. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

The Anthony and Hope Harrington Scholarship

Due to a generous endowment from Anthony Harrington, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs in Latin America.

The scholarship ranges from $1,000 to $5,000. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

Barbara Anderson Travel Award

Established by the UNC African Studies Center, this scholarship is available to undergraduate students participating in summer or fall Africa-based study abroad programs.

The scholarship typically ranges from $500 to $1,000. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

The Bejarano-Benning Scholarships for Latin America

Due to a generous endowment from Leslie C. Benning and Dr. Rafael Bejarano-Narbona, the UNC Study Abroad Office provides this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad program in Latin America.

First consideration will be given to students who are interested in pursuing careers in international business, medicine, or public health, especially those individuals focused on improving the education and/or healthcare of women.

The scholarship ranges from $500 to $1,500. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

The Bejarano-Benning Scholarships for Spain/Iberian Peninsula

Due to a generous endowment from Leslie C. Benning and Dr. Rafael Bejarano-Narbona, the UNC Study Abroad Office provides this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs in Spain or Portugal.

Bettie R. McKaig and Ross Vaughan Study Abroad Scholarship

This is a need-based scholarship, created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Brian and Susan Mashburn Study Abroad Scholarship

Due to a generous endowment from Brian and Susan Mashburn, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs.

This is a need-based scholarship, created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Carolina Center for Jewish Studies

Several endowments created by alumni and friends of the Carolina Center for Jewish Studies support a range of scholarships in the field of Jewish studies, including fieldwork at the Huqoq archaeological excavation site in Israel.

Endowments that have recently supported undergraduate students participating in fieldwork at Huqoq include the David Katz Study Abroad Grant Award, the Howard R. Levine Student Excellence Fund in Jewish Studies, the Lori and Eric Sklut Undergraduate Experiential Learning Grant Award, the Peter and Barbara Schneider Student Excellence Grant Award, the Fund for Jewish Studies, and the Elsie Kaplan “Mother” Shapiro/ZBT Undergraduate Research and Travel Grant Award.

Center for Student Success (CFSS)

Several endowments created by alumni and friends of the Center for Student Success (CFSS) support a range of scholarships for students that have engaged with CFSS.

Funds that have recently supported undergraduate, CFSS students participating in study abroad programs include the Bost Family Excellence Fund, the Chesney Carolina Firsts Excellence Fund, the Cumpston Fellows First-Generation Scholarship, the Kibler Carolina Firsts Excellence Fun, Marleigh Desmond Hicks Study Abroad Scholarship, and the Wheeler and Davis Excellence Fund.

Award amounts vary based on available funds. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

Charles and Susan Hauser Covenant Study Abroad Scholarship

Due to a generous endowment from Charles H. Hauser and Susan R. Hauser, the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid in collaboration with the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate, in-state, Carolina Covenant Scholars participating in summer, semester, or yearlong programs.

This is a need-based scholarship specifically for Carolina Covenant Scholars, created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

The Charles Aycock McLendon, Sr. Study Abroad Scholarship

Due to a generous endowment from Charles Aycock McLendon, Jr., the UNC Study Abroad Office provides this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs.

The scholarship ranges from $1,000 to $5,000. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

The Charles Garland Johnson Scholarships

Due to a generous endowment from Charles Garland Johnson, Sr. and his family, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs.

First consideration will be given to students from Surry, Wilkes, and Yadkin Counties, followed by North Carolina residents from remaining counties with financial need.

This scholarship was created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

The scholarship ranges from $500 to $10,000. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

The Christopher Mead Armitage and Pauline Brooks Armitage Scholarship for Visiting Students

The Christopher Mead Armitage and Pauline Brooks Armitage Scholarship for Visiting Students is a scholarship opportunity for students accepted to the Visiting Student Program at Oxford University, St Edmund Hall. The scholarship will cover the cost of tuition, housing, and most meals for the Michaelmas term at St Edmund Hall. The scholarship may be awarded to one UNC-CH undergraduate student in the Arts and Humanities each year. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

Craig L. Rollins Study Abroad Scholarship

Due to a generous donation from Craig L. Rollins, Catherine C. Rollins, and Arthur W. Rollins, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity to undergraduate students majoring in Economics or Classics while studying abroad during summer, semester or yearlong programs.

This is a need-based scholarship, created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

C. V. Starr Scholarship Fund

Due to a generous donation from The Starr Foundation, the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid in collaboration with the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity to students participating in international study abroad programs during summer, semester or yearlong programs.

This is a need-based scholarship, created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Deanna Day Carolina Covenant Memorial Endowment Fund

Due to a generous endowment from Deborah Day Roach and Edgar M. Roach Jr., the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid in collaboration with the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate, in-state, Carolina Covenant Scholars participating in summer, semester, or yearlong programs.

This is a need-based scholarship specifically for Carolina Covenant Scholars, created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Eleanor Barnes Study Abroad Scholarship

The Eleanor Barnes study abroad scholarship supports undergraduate and graduate students in the UNC College of Arts and Sciences studying abroad during the summer, semester, or yearlong programs.

The Elizabeth Malone Roughton Study Abroad Scholarship

Due to a generous endowment in honor of Elizabeth Malone Roughton, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this $5,000 scholarship opportunity to undergraduate students majoring in Dramatic Art while studying abroad during a semester or yearlong program in Ireland. Scholarship recipients must be accepted to an approved study abroad program in Ireland to be eligible.

Emma and Margaret Lyon Study Abroad Fund

Due to a generous endowment from Laura Raper Stroupe Barrier, the UNC Study Abroad Office provides this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs.

This is a need-based scholarship, created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Emmett English McLean Study Abroad Scholarship Fund

Due to a generous endowment from Emmett E. McLean, the UNC Study Abroad Office provides this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs.

This is a need-based scholarship, created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Frances and E.T. Rollins Jr. Study Abroad Scholarship

Frances Rollins of Durham established this fund in 2008 in honor of her late husband, a UNC graduate and a former owner, board chairman and publisher of The Herald-Sun in Durham. This scholarship opportunity is for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs.

This is a need-based scholarship starting at $1,000, created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

Fry Family Study Abroad Scholarship

Due to a generous endowment from Jeremy and Nicole Fry, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in semester or yearlong study abroad programs in Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.

This is a need-based scholarship starting at $3,000, created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

Grace Alley Walsh Travel Fund

Due to a generous endowment from Grace Virginia Alley Walsh, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs.

First consideration will be given to students from Alamance County, North Carolina or White County, Georgia, followed by North Carolina residents with financial need.

Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

Greer and Bryan Pope Study Abroad Scholarship Endowment Fund

Due to a generous endowment from Greer Barber Pope and Bryan Holmes Pope, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs.

This is a need-based scholarship, created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

The award amount varies based on funding availability with a maximum award amount of $3,000. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

Grey Lineweaver Scholarship for Latin America

Due to a generous endowment from Grey Watkins Lineweaver, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs in Latin America.

The scholarship ranges from $500 to $2,500. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

Harris Teeter Study Abroad Scholarship

Due to a generous endowment from the Dickson Foundation, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs.

First consideration will be given to students who have worked or whose parents have worked at Harris Teeter, followed by North Carolina residents with financial need.

Scholarship amounts start at $2,000 and can vary based on funding availability. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

Haywood Family Study Abroad Scholarship Fund

Due to a generous endowment from Emmett Boney Haywood and Hubert Benbury Haywood III, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs.

This is a need-based scholarship starting at $1,000, created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

#HeelsAbroad Scholarship

The Study Abroad Office offers this $500 scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs.

Help other Tar Heels picture themselves studying abroad through images and storytelling.

This is a need-based scholarship, created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Helen Elizabeth Dayvault Sechler Study Abroad Scholarship

Due to a generous endowment from John Jackson Sechler, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in semester or yearlong study abroad programs in England.

This is a need-based scholarship, created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

The Horace J. Shumate Memorial Fund

Due to a generous endowment from Carol Shumate, the UNC Study Abroad Office provides this scholarship opportunity starting at $1,250 for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong programs.

First consideration will be given to students who demonstrate how their intended study abroad program permits them to explore new academic or personal adventures, challenges, or language skills, to study in geographic regions that are unfamiliar.

Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

Ishna J. Hall Excellence Fund

Due to a generous endowment from Greer Barber Pope and Bryan Holmes Pope to honor the legacy of Ishna J. Hall, a development officer in the College of Arts and Sciences at UNC Chapel Hill, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs.

First consideration will be given to students who are members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and who have never travelled internationally.

Award amounts vary based on available funds. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

The Jan and Steve Capps Study Abroad Ambassador Scholarship

Due to a generous endowment from Jan and Steve Capps, the UNC Study Abroad Office provides this $5,000 scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in semester or yearlong programs.

First consideration will be given to students with demonstrated financial need from Dare, Hertford, Martin, Nash, and Northampton Counties, followed by North Carolina residents from the remaining counties with demonstrated financial need.

This scholarship was created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

The Joan H. Gillings Study Abroad Scholarship

The Joan H. Gillings Study Abroad Scholarship shall provide support to UNC-CH Dramatic Art students. Scholarship recipients must be a declared Dramatic Art major or minor and must  be accepted to an approved study abroad program to study Dramatic Art. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferrable to a later semester.

The Joe Henry and Jenny C. Jenkins Scholarships

Due to a generous endowment in honor of Joe Henry and Jenny C. Jenkins, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong programs.  

First consideration will be given to students with demonstrated financial need from Bertie, Dare, and Hertford counties. Secondary consideration will be given to students with demonstrated financial need from Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Gates, Pasquotank, and Perquimans. 

Scholarship awards start at $5,000. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.  

John and Pamela Billing Study Abroad Scholarship

Due to a generous endowment from John E. and Pamela M. Billing, the UNC Study Abroad Office provides this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs.

First consideration will be given to first generation students majoring or participating in programs connected to the environment or climate change.

Award amounts vary based on available funds. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

 

The Julia Preston Brumley Fund

The Julia Preston Brumley Fund shall provide support to students in American Studies who are participating in a semester or summer study abroad program approved by the Department of American Studies and the Office of Study Abroad.

Recipients, known as Julia Preston Brumley Scholars, are selected by a committee comprised of faculty from the Department of American Studies.

Kendalyn Lutz-Craver and Joseph N. Craver Family Study Abroad Fund

Due to a generous endowment from Kendalyn Lutz-Craver and Joseph N. Craver, the UNC Study Abroad Office provides this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs.

First consideration will be given to North Carolina residents from rural counties.

Award amounts vary based on available funds. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

The Lan Ma and Gang Pei Study Abroad Scholarship Fund

Due to a generous endowment from Lan Ma, Gang Pei, and Friends, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in semester or yearlong study abroad programs in Mainland China.

Award amounts vary based on available funds. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

Laura Hudson Richards Fund

Due to a generous endowment from Laura Hudson Richards, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students majoring in Global Studies for summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs.

This is a need-based scholarship starting at $2,500, created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

Lee Gravely Family Study Abroad Scholarship Fund

Due to a generous endowment from Lee S. Gravely, Frances C. Gravely, R. Steve Gravely, Susan E. Gravely, and Page K. Gravely II, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad programs.

First consideration will be given to North Carolina residents. This is a need-based scholarship, created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

The scholarship ranges from $3,000 to $5,000. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

The Leonard G. and Rozelia S. Herring Study Abroad Award

Due to a generous endowment from Leonard G. and Rozelia S. Herring, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in semester or yearlong programs.

First consideration will be given to recipients of the Leonard G. and Rozelia S. Herring Scholarship or the Albert Lee Herring Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Lori Lewis Schipper International Experience Fund

Due to a generous endowment from Paul Schipper, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong programs.

First consideration will be given to students participating in global internship programs.

Award amounts vary based on available funds. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

Louise T. and William G. Duckett Study Abroad Scholarship and Innovation Fund

Due to a generous gift from Louise T. and William G. Duckett, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong programs.

Award amounts vary based on available funds. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

Michael L. and Matthew L. Boyatt Award

Alumnus Michael Boyatt of Durham established this award in 1996 with his son, alumnus Matthew, also of Durham. This scholarship helps fund undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong study abroad program. 

Students must be majoring in Global Studies or History with a 3.2 minimum GPA, with a preference for students who have not studied abroad in an earlier term. 

Award amounts range up to $2,500. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester. 

Mitchell Family Global Experience Fund

Due to a generous endowment from Preston L. Mitchell and Christy T. Mitchell, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong programs.

Award amounts vary based on available funds. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

Olmstead Family Study Abroad Scholarship Fund

Due to a generous gift from Jill Isenberg Olmstead and Jonathan Calhoun Olmstead, the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong programs.

This is a need-based scholarship, created with the purpose of providing opportunities for students to study abroad who would not otherwise be able to afford this option.

Susan Gravely Study Abroad Scholarship

Due to a generous endowment from William G. Ross, Jr., the UNC Study Abroad Office offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students participating in summer, semester, or yearlong programs.

Suzanne Hynes Memorial Travel Fund

Due to a generous endowment from James E. S. Hynes and Margaret Pardee Hynes, the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid, in collaboration with the Study Abroad Office, offers this scholarship opportunity for undergraduate, Blue Sky Scholars participating in summer, semester, or yearlong programs.

Award amounts vary based on available funds. Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.

Tar Heels Global Ambassadors Study Abroad Scholarship

Established and awarded by the UNC Athletics Department in collaboration with the UNC Study Abroad Office, this scholarship is available to undergraduate, Varsity student athletes participating in summer study abroad programs.

Award amounts vary and can range up to programs’ total Cost of Attendance.

Once awarded, scholarships are not transferable to a later semester.
