Understanding Your UNC Bill

Your UNC Bill may include the following:

  • Study Abroad Fee
  • Tuition & Fees – costs related to the academic delivery of the program
  • Program Costs – can include things such as housing, meals, included excursions, activity fees, and other costs required by host institution
  • GeoBlue Insurance – international health insurance

Remember, there are other out-of-pocket expenses to account for that will not be reflected on your UNC Bill. These are costs you pay yourself, and most will vary based on your personal spending habits. Click here and scroll to “Understanding Budget Sheets” for more information.

Line items listed under Cashier Billed Expenses will be charged to your UNC Student Account via ConnectCarolina. Charges and deadlines occur on the same timeline as billing for the term at UNC. See the University Cashier’s Important Dates page for more information.

Note: Program Costs may include expenses for housing, meals, special excursion fees, etc. Please note that your UNC Student Bill for study abroad will be distinctly different from that of a residential semester billing and will reflect the study abroad program budget lines.

Some programs require students to pay certain items out-of-pocket, directly to the partner institution or other organization. For example, a deposit paid with submission of a housing application, or a visa application fee. These charges will be outlined on the budget sheet. Be aware that a cashier’s check, money order, or international wire transfer may be required to cover costs abroad. We encourage students to check with their local bank for more information on these products.

The Study Abroad Application Fee is part of the application process. Students must pay the non-refundable application fee in order to submit an application to study abroad. This fee supports the expense of maintaining an online application system and covers the staff time required to review applications.

The Study Abroad Administrative Fee will be billed to the student’s account only if they accept an offer from the Study Abroad Office to study abroad by signing the Study Abroad Contract. After a student signs the Study Abroad Contract, the Study Abroad Administrative Fee becomes non-refundable. If a student withdraws from a program after accepting the offer, they still will be charged in the same billing cycle. However, students may apply the paid fee to a future UNC Study Abroad program. The UNC Study abroad Office charges the Study Abroad Administrative Fee to provide core professional support services to UNC and visiting students participating in University approved study abroad programs, as well as parents and UNC Faculty & Staff.

The Study Abroad Office makes every attempt to keep program costs to a minimum. However, when you commit to participating in a program, our office begins to make financial commitments on your behalf. If you must withdraw, it is your responsibility to immediately notify your Study Abroad Advisor in writing, email is preferred, and to understand the financial implications of your withdrawal. Read more about UNC Study Abroad and partner cancellation policies.

The Study Abroad Office reserves a small pool of funds for students whose personal circumstances make it challenging for them to cover the full cost of their study abroad program and complete their studies at UNC Chapel Hill. Documentation of hardship is required. Examples of supporting documentation include a physician’s letter or obituary. Hardship Grants typically do not exceed $1,000. Students can write to abroad@unc.edu or to their study abroad advisor to request the grant.
