About My Study Abroad Program

Major/Minor: Media and Journalism
Program: College Year in Athens
Location: Athens, Greece
Email: Vinesett@live.UNC.edu
Term: Summer 2021

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I selected my program because of the unique course opportunities offered in my host country! My class focused on the Anthropology of the Mediterranean Diet, which means I not only got to see many beautiful places in Greece, but also was able to taste my way through Greece and get credit for it!

What did you learn about yourself?
I learned about my ability to take leadership and get out of my comfort zone. If we had a free weekend, I was the one organizing travel to new islands, even though this was my first time traveling alone. I loved the independence and confidence I was able to develop abroad.

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
My favorite part about my program besides the amazing landscapes of Greece was the connections I was able to make, not only with those in my study abroad program, but also with some of the Greek locals. Although I don’t keep in touch with everyone, I am able to FaceTime some of my friends from across the States and I’m even Facebook friends with one of the bakery owners in Athens!

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
Uncertainty is part of the experience, if you aren’t uncomfortable then you aren’t doing it right! Lean into your discomfort, it will be where some of your best memories are made! At the same time, trust your gut and never put yourself in a situation that you know you won’t benefit from!

How do you identify?
