About My Study Abroad Program
Major/Minor: Biology, media and Journalism, food studies
Program: University of Copenhagen
Location: Copenhagen, Denmark
Email: hengshi@unc.edu
Term: Spring 2024
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
Denmark is the home of legos and the oldest amusement park in the world. Scandinavian countries are known for their excellent social welfare and it has been always described as "mysterious".
What did you learn about yourself?
Sometimes I set high standards for other people without knowing it. When I was in Denmark I expected Danish students to speak in English when they were talking with each other so I could participate in their conversation. I blamed them for not including them. But then I realized as a non-native speaker myself, I probably wouldn't be talking in English when most people around me are non-English speakers.
What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
Experiencing the Hygge and biking culture in Denmark.
What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
Keep an open mind and enjoy the uncertainties, they make you stronger. Stay connected with fellow UNC students who are also studying abroad in your program, they are your family there.
How do you identify?
Student of color
Could you share any experiences where your identity played a role in your time abroad?
Being an international student at UNC prior to my study abroad, I'm very experienced in hope to cope with homesick and adapt to new culture
