About My Study Abroad Program

Major/Minor: Italian and EXSS
Program: Lorenzo De Medici
Location: Florence, Italy
Email: brendaa@live.unc.edu
Term: Fall 2019

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
Because I wanted to experience the Italian culture and learn the language better

What did you learn about yourself?
so many things. I learned that I will make sure I achieve the goals that I set for myself and not let anything stand in my way and also that I am independent.

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
Going out for apertivo and playing tennis with my Italian friends.

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
Make sure that you meet the people who live there because they can teach you so much about yourself and help you to appreciate other cultures and their ways of living. They will not only help you to have the best time while abroad, but they will open your mind to new ideas and ways of thinking.

Would you do it again?
in a heart beat

How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at UNC?
To be honest, I did not spend as much time studying and worrying about my classes while abroad. I spent most of my energy trying to talk to, meet with, and learn from the locals because I felt like I could get a classroom education anytime I wanted (and have and will continue to be educated in the classroom while at UNC and after) but I might never have the opportunity to go to a new place and learn directly from the natives. Rather than being "taught" by them, I learned simply by spending a lot of time with them--I learned by observation and by trial and error and by being made fun of when I did something out of the normal for their culture. I ate the foods they ate, I drank as they did, I tried to speak with them in Italian, I just did life with them. That, to me, was far more enriching than had I simply gone and studied by butt off in the classroom like I do every semester in America. I also took this chance to travel and explore other parts of Europe so that I could try to learn from those other cultures as well.

If you faced any challenges abroad, where could you turn to get the support you needed?
The dean of students at LdM was very helpful, as well as my advisor who worked abraod.
