Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I've always wanted to study abroad because I strongly believe in the value of a global education and understanding of other cultures. I selected this program because it best aligned with my academic trajectory of studying Spanish at UNC and I loved all of the cultural experiences that were planned for us in Sevilla.
What did you learn about yourself?
I learned that actively communicating in Spanish is something I want to continue to work on. I am used to communicating with Spanish-speaking individuals from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba so it was different trying to understand the dialect spoken in Spain. People in Spain speak very quickly and it can sometimes be harder to understand what they are saying, and I found this particularly difficult during interviews with locals, however, I loved the challenge and want to be able to communicate with all Spanish-speakers, regardless of their dialect.
What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
One of my favorite memories was visiting the Alhambra in Granada. It was an incredibly beautiful tour from the art to the gardens, I loved being able to immerse myself and soak in the history of the palace and learn about all of the stories.
What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
I would say to be patient with yourself and the journey. Ultimately, you wanted to travel abroad for a reason and you wanted to get something meaningful out of that trip, so remember your why. Remember your overarching person and don't be afraid to engage in new opportunities and experiences because studying abroad is the opportunity of a lifetime and you don't want it to go to waste.
