Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I have a curiosity about other cultures and a desire to immerse myself in a different way of life. Studying abroad provides the opportunity to live like a local, experience new traditions, learn a new language, and gain a deeper understanding of the world beyond your home country. I chose Semester at Sea because it provides an unparalleled opportunity to explore multiple countries and cultures within a single semester. By visiting 10-12 different countries, I knew I would gain a broad, global perspective that would deepen my understanding of the world. This experience allowed me to compare and contrast different societies, economies, and cultures in real-time.

What did you learn about yourself?
First and foremost, I learned how to be a global citizen. By visiting multiple countries and engaging with diverse communities, I realized the importance of empathy, open-mindedness, and cultural sensitivity. I learned how interconnected the world is and how our actions can have a broader impact. I also learned how to be resilient and flexible during times we walked down the gangway without knowing what we were going to do or where we were going to sleep. I learned to be independent, trust my instincts, make decisions on the fly, and navigate complex environments on my own. Finally, I learned how to be a lifelong learner. There is so much to learn about the world and I want to keep exploring, asking questions, and seeking out new experiences.

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
One night at sea, my friends and I decided to drag our mattresses up to the top deck of the ship and have a sleepover under the stars.

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
1. Immerse yourself in local culture. Participate in local traditions, try new foods, and engage with local communities. The more you immerse yourself, the more comfortable and confident you’ll feel in your new environment. 2. It it's uncomfortable, you're growing. Trust in your ability to handle new experiences, even when they are challenging. Remember that personal growth often comes from stepping outside your comfort zone. Every experience, good or bad, contributes to your journey. 3. Embrace the unexpected and make the most of the random make-shift plans. Things won’t always go as planned, whether it’s travel disruptions, language barriers, or cultural misunderstandings. Stay flexible and open to change. Being adaptable allows you to make the most of unexpected situations and find new opportunities in the challenges you encounter.
