Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
During my study abroad experience, I had the opportunity to engage in a range of enriching academic and cultural activities. My daily schedule began with BIOL 310 - Special Topics in Clinical Anatomy and Skills, where we delved into human anatomy using actual cadavers. This intensive 4-hour class provided a hands-on approach to learning that was both fascinating and invaluable. After a 2-hour lunch break, we continued with HS 215A - Management of Care, a class focused on the practical aspects of healthcare management, which lasted for 2.5 hours. Beyond the classroom, I explored various remarkable destinations. I visited Limassol, with its vibrant cultural scene and beautiful waterfront; Famagusta, known for its historical ruins and scenic views; Ayia Napa, famous for its stunning beaches and lively nightlife; Paphos, with its ancient ruins and picturesque harbor; and Troodos, which offered breathtaking mountain scenery and hiking opportunities. Throughout this journey, I resided in Nicosia, immersing myself in its rich history and dynamic urban life. This experience not only enhanced my academic knowledge but also allowed me to deeply connect with the local culture and history. I selected my program by contacting my study abroad advisor and scheduling an appointment with her. During our meeting, I shared my future plans, and she provided me with a list of programs offered at UNC that aligned with my interests. This guidance helped me choose the most suitable program for my goals.
What did you learn about yourself?
Through my study abroad experience, I discovered a significant strength within myself: my ability to adapt to new environments and embrace the unknown with confidence. Immersing myself in a different culture and navigating unfamiliar academic and social settings not only tested but also confirmed my resilience and adaptability. This experience reaffirmed my commitment to pursuing a career in healthcare and deepened my passion for the field, as I witnessed firsthand the importance of cultural competence and empathy in providing care. Additionally, one of the most surprising aspects of my time abroad was encountering the Green Line, the demarcation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The physical and political separation was a poignant reminder of the complex historical and cultural dynamics that shape the world, enriching my understanding of global issues and the importance of fostering dialogue and understanding across divides.
What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
One of my favorite memories from this program was going to the beach in Paphos to watch the sunset with the friends I made during the program. As we sat on the rocks, the sky transformed into a breathtaking palette of oranges, yellows, and reds. We felt genuinely happy and connected, sharing stories and laughter while the sun dipped below the horizon. In that moment, we were all filled with a deep sense of gratitude for the experience and the bonds we had formed. It was a perfect blend of natural beauty and cherished companionship, making it a memory I'll treasure forever.
What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
For future students who may face uncertainties while they are abroad, my advice is to embrace the unknown and stay open-minded. Challenges and uncertainties are inevitable, but they are also opportunities for growth and learning. Reach out for support when needed, whether from program advisors, fellow students, or locals. Building a network of friends and mentors can provide comfort and guidance. Additionally, maintaining a flexible attitude and being willing to adapt to new situations will help you navigate any obstacles that come your way. Remember, every experience, even the difficult ones, contributes to your personal and academic development. Stay positive, resilient, and make the most of your time abroad.
