About My Study Abroad Program
Major/Minor: Statistics and Economics
Program: University of Sussex
Location: Brighton, England
Term: Spring 2019
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I knew I wanted to travel the world and I thought a semester abroad would be a perfect way to get a taste of a traveling while still having some safe structure. I chose Sussex because it was based in a very young and cool town.
What did you learn about yourself?
I learned that I am a lot more brave than I thought I was. I was so scared about going over there but once I actually got there, I was more excited than anything.
What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
I loved going to Dublin, Ireland with one of my housemates. We explored the town all on our own and it was such an amazing experience.
What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
I know it seems super scary to go abroad by yourself to a University where’s you won’t know anyone at all, but it is so worth it and you make so many friends who are in your exact position.
Would you do it again?
A million times yes.
How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at UNC?
They focus a lot more on independent studying so you only have one or two assignments throughout the entire year and then a final. Whereas at UNC you have a ton of assignments throughout the year to guide your studying.
Is there any advice you would give to other students who share your identity?
Traveling alone is nerve racking so anytime you’re feeling stressed, just take a deep breath and chill. Everything will be fine.
If you faced any challenges abroad, where could you turn to get the support you needed?
I turned to my international housemates, we became quite a close knit group. However, the university also had a International student department with advisors if you ever needed help.
