Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I was applying to Carolina my senior year of high school and saw an option to spend your first semester abroad through Carolina Global Launch and I thought that would be a wonderful opportunity to see and explore the world while at college. I decided that I wanted to go somewhere that spoke English, so I chose the Scotland location as my 1st choice and Ireland as my 2nd choice. I was so lucky to get into the Carolina Global Launch Stirling, Scotland program and going was one of the best decisions of my life.
What did you learn about yourself?
I learned how much I love learning and experiencing different cultures and trying to soak up as much of it as I can while I am there. I loved trying and learning about new foods, dances, experiences, traditions, history, and games of Scotland. This trip has made me want to keep traveling as much as I possibly can in my lifetime so I can gain knowledge about as many cultures as possible.
What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
One of my favorite memories from this program is traveling around Scotland with my other Global Launch friends from Carolina. There were so many amazing excursions that were planned for us in our program that were full of enriching experiences. These unique experiences and gorgeous views of Scotland helped me make lifelong friends through this program. My favorite excursion they took us on was the Isle of Skye weekend. There were beautiful views, and it was a great experience to get to know everyone better and gain closer friendships.
What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
Make the most of every opportunity that you have been given while abroad. Studying abroad is a little scary at times because it is very new, but these moments will shape you into the person you will become. Always know that your Carolina family is here for you. There is always someone who will be there if you have questions or concerns. I also encourage you to keep in close contact with your friends and families. I called my parents almost every day while abroad and it makes you feel more comfortable and closer to home.
How do you identify?
Scholarship Recipient, Rural County Resident
Could you share any experiences where your identity played a role in your time abroad?
As a girl traveling around Europe safety was something I was very worried about but as long as I was with a group of people, I always felt safe. I also think that being from a rural county this trip really helped me broaden my horizon and allowed me to experience more of the world.
Is there any advice you would give to other students who share your identity?
Make lots of friends and travel with them! Not only is it safer to travel in groups but it helps you meet more people with different experiences and helps you learn more about other cultures.
