About My Study Abroad Program

Major/Minor: Biology (BS), Chemistry (BA), AAAD minor
Program: Chemistry in Japan (Inorganic Chemistry)
Location: Osaka, Japan
Email: mcdonal@unc.edu
Term: SSI 2024 Chemistry in Japan

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
Inorganic chemistry is required for chemistry majors, but I have always wanted to go to Japan, so when I got an email from the chemistry department about this program, I know I had to apply.

What did you learn about yourself?
The biggest thing I learned was confidence in myself in stressful situations. I have never traveled to another country by myself. Also, being able to handle a stressful class while being in an unfamiliar place. It was so rewarding to step out of my comfort zone and accomplish something I never thought was possible.

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
My favorite part of the trip was when we spent the day in Miyajima. This absolutely beautiful island.

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
When choosing a program, make sure that you can handle the course load of that class. Are you able to handle the class while also exploring this country? You may have to sacrifice some fun time for study time because this isn't a simple vacation. You will have to work hard and make sacrifices, but in the end it is so rewarding.

How do you identify?
LGBTQ+

Could you share any experiences where your identity played a role in your time abroad?
LGBTQ+ isn’t as common in Japan, but I never felt uncomfortable abroad in anyway.

Is there any advice you would give to other students who share your identity?
Japan may not be the most LGBTQ+ friendly place on paper due to it not being very common, but locals are very nice and friendly. Japan has the lowest crime rate in the world so chances of anything happening to you based on your LGBTQ+ identity is extremely low.
