About My Study Abroad Program

Major/Minor: Political Science and Peace, War, and Defense with a minor in Environmental Science
Program: Lorenzo de Mecidi (LDM)
Location: Florence, Italy
Email: ralarue@unc.edu
Term: Summer 2022

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I chose this program because of the price and the location. The program also had two transferable credits for one of my majors and my minor. It was a great fit for me overall.

What did you learn about yourself?
I learned that I am a lot more independent and strong than I thought I was. I had a few personal challenges in my life while I was abroad and I think I really proved that I could take care of myself. It also showed me how much I enjoy traveling and really set in the travel bug for me.

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
One of my favorite memories of the program was eating a lovely steak dinner with all the friends I made. While the program had students from all over the United States, I found a great group of Tar Heels who I am still good friends with now. It's so wonderful to be able to continue to share memories with those you got so close to while abroad.

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
I would advise finding a good group of friends and making sure you have a support system. I would also say reach out for help when you need it. There are people who love and care for you and want you to succeed.

How do you identify?
