Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I chose my program because it offered me an opportunity to go abroad while also earning two elective credits towards my degree. The two 400-level Econ credits associated with this program is what caused me to apply, but also I was intrigued by Croatia. I have never explored South Eastern Europe, so I thought I would take this opportunity to!
What did you learn about yourself?
Through my study abroad experience, I learned the art of flexibility and staying true to myself. There were many moments where I had to compromise with myself as I faced some challenges, and being flexible helped to ensure that I was going to have fun but also doing what I need to do to stay true to myself.
What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
One of the courses we were taking was Sport Economics, and every week Professor Balaban would tell us about the various sports events that was occurring in Split. Towards the end of May, we gathered with the rest of Split in front of Diocletian's palace to watch the Final for the Croatian Football Cup. The local professional team, Hajduk Split, played against their rivals from Rijeka, and won the match! The crowd erupted with cheer and the pandemonium that followed carried on throughout the night. It was truly a night I will never forget.
What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
Stay open minded and try new things! This is truly a once in a lifetime experience to gain a new perspective on life and of yourself, so why not take advantage of it.
How do you identify?
Student of color
