Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I had many reasons why I wanted to study abroad and with my specific program. My program not only fulfilled my last grade, but it also gave me credits I needed for my honors requirements. As a rising senior, I was reluctant to study abroad as I felt it was too late for me. However, I was persuaded by my friend to apply and chose the program that I felt catered the most to my major. I saw that the program would be in Thailand, and that only made me more confident in my decision to apply. I was originally born in Burma and moved to the US as a refugee when I was very young. I felt this was the perfect opportunity to connect back to my roots and experience what I had not been able to do growing up in the States.

What did you learn about yourself?
This experience was definitely eye-opening and filled with surprises. It's crazy to think how much growth I went through in the short span of 4 weeks. I came to realize how privileged a lifestyle I've had in the States, which has easy access to laundry machines. Doing laundry in Thailand was a workout. I have never claimed to be someone who loves the country or nature, but during our trip to the mountains, I realized how happy I was just looking at the horizon and seeing all the different land formations. I had sworn I was a city girl but I ended up enjoying the rural side more than Bangkok. I also learned a lot about my role within a group dynamic and what type of people I gravitate towards. A lot of things I was used to within a group dynamic changed and I got a little taste of a different side to me. I also learned a lot about the people within the group and how we each navigated our roles.

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
It may sound crazy but I think I enjoyed how much learning I did during my program. Sometimes, when we think of studying abroad, we forget the study aspect and are only focused on the abroad aspect. So it was surprising how much I enjoyed the lectures and hands-on activities we had throughout the 4 weeks. Aside from that, I got really fortunate and made some amazing friends. The 4 weeks flew by when I was having so much fun with friends. I didn't even have the time to be homesick since I was surrounded by friends who I was constantly exploring and making memories with.

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
I think it is so important to be very open-minded. I myself am so surprised at how I was doing things I had never dreamed of. At times, you may feel burnt out and miss your own company, which is 100% understandable and valid. Dont be afraid to ask for that space and time when you need it. I would say any uncertainties that you may feel, are probably shared by many other folks within your program. I would also recommend having clear communication with your program advisors/professors for anything. I was fortunate to have built such great relationships with my two professors that I felt safe and well taken care of. Overall, this experience will definitely be new, but new isn't always scary. I would hope that everyone could appreciate the excitement just as much, or even more than the uncertainties.
