About My Study Abroad Program
Major/Minor: Journalism/Music
Program: UNC Study Abroad
Location: Huqoq, Israel
Email: hurleyg4@live.unc.edu
Term: Summer 2019
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I chose to study abroad so I could get more involved in the Journalism school at UNC and so I could gain experience in my field.
What did you learn about yourself?
I am good at working under pressure and being flexible. I had to conduct a lot of interviews with archaeologists on my trip that were not always willing to be interviewed. I had to get to know them and make them feel comfortable around me first.
What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
I got to swim in the Dead sea which is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. The water is crystal blue and surrounded by a vast desert.
What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
Research all of your options to find something that is right for you. Apply for scholarships immediately to increase your chance of receiving one.
Would you do it again?
Yes, but I would like to go to a different part of the world.
How did your study abroad experience prepare you for your future career?
I learned how to become a better journalist and added many things to my skill set including video editing and script writing. The experience will look great on a resume and should help me pursue opportunities in the future.
How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at UNC?
I have attached one of the stories that I completed in Israel featuring my footage and my voice.
