Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
The first time I studied abroad was simply because I was looking for something to do over the summer. The program I found was perfect as it fulfilled two credits I needed for both of my majors, and it was led by one of my favorite professors, Dr. Parikh. I thought this would be a wonderful opportunity to build upon networking, learn through another culture, and gain credit needed for my two majors. For the second study abroad program I did, which also happened to be in London (not done on purpose), I was drawn to it due to the internship aspect of it. I had the opportunity to work in London while studying abroad and learn hands on within their culture. I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to further develop my understanding in the career field I'm interested in, and see how it may manifest different internationally versus domestically.
What did you learn about yourself?
I learned that I am able to preserve through slightly uncomfortable situations, as I was put into some slightly uncomfortable situations that were simply due to the fact I was a foreigner to them. I learned that I am adaptable to changes, as there were a large amount of changed from my home country and the country I was visiting. Additionally, I learned that I value travel and exploring more than I previously thought. While abroad, I visited 9 different countries and immersed myself within their culture and history. This has made me want to travel more and see what exists beyond the comfort of my home country.
What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
All of the laughs shared with the people I met on this trip. I met amazing people in my cohort, but also amazing people from my internship. Almost a year after my program in the Fall, I still hold amazing relationships with people I met on this trip. One of my favorite memories was our trip to Stonehenge, and just beginning to form these relationships and friendships with my cohort.
What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
Study abroad was an amazing experience and I ALWAYS recommend a semester over a summer term, if applicable to their schedule. You may feel uncomfortable the first few weeks, but you will learn so much about yourself and the world if you take this opportunity. Additionally, please prioritize your safety. Do not get lost into the "magic" of being abroad and in a new place, please make sure you are being safe and aware of your surroundings.
How do you identify?
First Generation College Student, Covenant Scholars, Scholarship Recipient
Is there any advice you would give to other students who share your identity?
If finances are a struggle for you, don't completely cross study abroad out. Even if you have to take out a small loan, like I did, it is worth it and is typically more affordable than you would guess.
