Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I always knew I wanted to go Australia at some point in my life, and being able to accomplish my personal goals alongside furthering my education was the most ideal scenario. After learning about Sydney’s beautiful beaches, architecture, and overall lifestyle, I knew that was where I wanted to go. I chose the University of Sydney specifically because of the university’s close approximation to Sydney’s Central Business District (CBD) and esteemed global reputation.

What did you learn about yourself?
I learned about my strong levels of curiosity and genuine interest in cultures and places all around the world. I learned how to maintain relationships with friends and family from home and UNC while being on the other side of the world. Lastly, the Australian lifestyle is much different than the USA, which taught me appreciate little things in life more and take the time for self-care.

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
My favorite memory of the program was attending Surf Camp, which was offered through the university. It was a weekend long, overnight trip where I was taught how to surf by local instructors, while building relationships with other students from all over the world who shared similar interests as me. Surfing was something I always wanted to learn how to do, and I’m thankful that this program allowed me to achieve this goal.

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
I would urge future students to devote time for a few things that remind you of home while abroad. Whether it’s calling family or friends, cooking a meal that is special to you, or any acts of self-care you may need- make time for it! This experience was my first time out of the country and I traveled alone. I learned to trust myself and know that there is something to learn from every experience.
