About My Study Abroad Program
Program: Spanish and Service in the Galapagos through USFQ
Location: San Cristobal, Galapagos, Ecuador
Term: Summer 2019
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I have always wanted to study abroad and knew that the next step in advancing my Spanish speaking abilities was immersion. This program was new and offered a scholarship and was in Latin America so I went for it!
What did you learn about yourself?
That I really do enjoy learning Spanish and adore the Latin American culture- music, food, dance, language, kiss on the cheek to greet one another, and incredible amount of hospitality given to any and everyone.
What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
Going snorkeling and island hopping to Isabela on our open weekend
What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
Be open to new foods, new ways of life, new languages, new experiences, and new friendships with locals and your fellow students. Remind yourself everyday abroad of what a privilege it is to attend a university where such amazing programs are offered and made accessible to all students. Have fun!!!
Would you do it again?
How did your study abroad experience prepare you for your future career?
As a future teacher, this experience gave me an opportunity to be in a school in Latin America a few times which was awesome. I am also thinking about concentrating in ELL in grad school so the exposure to language and living with a host brother learning English in school was so interesting to see how English is taught abroad.
How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at UNC?
They were condensed versions in the fact that the amount of literature we read was smaller because of how short the time was. Our essays were shorter as well. We had very little access to internet so the amount of resources for outside help were dwindled down. Everything was hand written and nearly done without wifi.
