About My Study Abroad Program

Major/Minor: Human development and family science and Spanish linguistics
Program: Connecting Worlds Abroad
Location: Sevilla, Spain
Email: mhope@unc.edu
Term: Summer 2024

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
I wanted to expand on my Spanish speaking abilities and also gain cultural experience. I had several friends on the semester abroad for this program and loved it, so I decided based on my friends’ experiences and my own desire for personal growth.

What did you learn about yourself?
My study abroad experience taught me invaluable life lessons beyond the classroom. I realize the importance of experiencing and educating myself on different cultures. Being in Spain, I admired how much they prioritized their families and leisure over work, which contrasts to the work-centric culture in the United States. This experience showed me that there are different and perhaps better ways to live my life, one focusing on the important things in my life.

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
One of my favorite memories was living with a host family. This was a truly authentic experience which allowed me to fully immerse myself in the spanish culture. In addition, I made lasting connection with locals in Spain, which made my time there even more meaningful.

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
I would say that there are many resources available to any student who needs it. I would tell them that the study abroad community is a community in which you can lean on each other because everyone is going through similar challenges.
