About My Study Abroad Program

Major/Minor: Biology/Neuroscience
Program: University of Gothenburg
Location: Gothenburg, Sweden
Email: caseysh@ad.unc.edu
Term: Spring 2019

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program?
The school I chose has not only the courses needed to further my credits towards my graduation date, but also those which captivate my attention and desires such as Animal Behavioral Science course or the multiple Psychology courses offered at the University. The classes offered here allow me to take the courses I need in order to graduate on time while also learning about other cultures around me. I chose this particular program in Sweden because it has a very different culture than I grew up in and there are amazing outdoor opportunities available.

What did you learn about yourself?
I grew up in a small town, so I went to school with the same people all of my life. When I went off to college to UNC I ended up being with many of the same people from high school. By studying abroad I left everything I had ever known which made me grow in so many ways. I became friends with people all around the world and was able to be apart of so many different cultures. I was the only UNC student to go to this program and I was the only American in this program. I grew in my confidence and willingness to put myself out there even if I might be told no. Studying abroad is one of the best experience of my life and I would recommend it to anyone

What is one of your favorite memories from your program?
One of my favorite memories would be going up north in Sweden with some friends, and seeing the Northern Lights. It was an experience of a lifetime and something I will never forget!

What advice do you have for future study abroad students?
My advice to future abroad student is to go in with in open mind and to get out of your comfort zone! Immerse yourself in their culture and take advantage of this incredible opportunity. Travel and make friends everywhere you go, friendships are the currency of the world!

Would you do it again?
100% I would do it again!

How did your study abroad experience prepare you for your future career?
I have learned how to interact with all types of people and I plan to use everything I learned in my semester abroad in my future career. I learned to not be afraid to put myself out there, which I believe will continue to benefit me throughout my whole life.

How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at UNC?
My classes abroad were very similar to classes I have taken at UNC. The few difference were that at my university in Sweden we focused a lot on projects and research throughout the year, and then we had a big final exam. At UNC we have several midterms as well as a final exam. Both are very good systems and I learn alot in both.

Is there any advice you would give to other students who share your identity?
Don't let your identity stop you from doing anything you love or want! Don't be afraid to put yourself out there, the award of doing that could be so much better than not!

If you faced any challenges abroad, where could you turn to get the support you needed?
I made a lot of special friends abroad who became my support system, especially when I need them the most!
