Receiving credit for study abroad post-program
Receiving credit for study abroad post-program
Will my transcript be automatically sent?
- This depends on your program. It’s always a good idea to check with your Study Abroad Advisor and/or your host institution to see what action you may need to take to ensure your Study Abroad transcript is sent in a timely manner to avoid any delays in processing your credit.
- All transcripts must be sent to credit_abroad@unc.edu. Official transcripts can not be accepted from students and must come directly from your host institution or your Study Abroad Advisor.
How do I know when my transcript has been received?
You will be automatically notified via email once we have successfully received your transcript.
How do I obtain my transcript after my program?
- For students who studied in 2018 and beyond, log into your HeelsAbroad application portal and look under Attached Documents to view and/or download a PDF copy of your transcript.
- If you no longer have access to your study abroad application page or need a certified/official copy of your host institution transcript for a graduate school application or other purpose, you can contact your host institution or third-party provider directly to request an official transcript or request your official transcript directly through the Study Abroad Office.
How will my study abroad grades show up in my Tar Heel Tracker/Connect Carolina?
- All courses abroad must be taken for an actual numerical/letter grade but will transfer back on a Study Abroad Pass/Fail conversion. You must earn the equivalent of a UNC “C” or better in order to earn credit. Please refer to our conversion guide to determine what is considered a passing or failing grade at your host institution. Your grades will be posted after your transcript has been received and processed.
- Because Study Abroad grades transfer on a Pass/Fail grading system, they are not factored into your UNC GPA. The only Study Abroad course that impacts your GPA is a Study Abroad Fail ‘SF’ grade.
How long will my grades take to show up in my Tar Heel Tracker/Connect Carolina after my program?
- This timeline varies depending on factors such as program type, term abroad, whether your course list is updated, and whether we have received your official transcript but generally takes anywhere from 2-6 months post program completion. Transcripts are typically processed by the Study Abroad office within one week of when they are initially received. If your course list is correctly updated and reflects all courses taken abroad, you can expect to see your grades posted in the weeks following. If you have not followed the steps to ensure your course list is updated, expect significant delays in having your transcript processed.
- For Faculty Led Programs, grades should be posted in Connect Carolina 72 hours after the program end date. If you do not see your grades posted, please contact your faculty member.
- If our records indicate that you are graduating in an approaching term, we will expedite having your credits processed where possible.
One of my Study Abroad courses is being used as a pre-requisite for a UNC course I am planning to take, but they have not been posted in Connect Carolina yet. What should I do?
In this case, we will do our best to work with you and Academic Advising to provide any necessary documentation to confirm the credits you will earn from your Study Abroad program to ensure you are able to enroll in the correct courses on campus.
How do I submit a re-evaluation request for a course? (i.e. This course is currently approved for Gen Ed(s) or a UNC equivalency, but I want it to count for something else instead; course falls under two departments).
Refer to our website for specific details to determine whether you meet the re-evaluation criteria. Please note that re-evaluation requests are not guaranteed.
I can’t log into my Credit Portal because it’s connected to my old high school email. What should I do?
If you are unable to log into your Credit Portal for any reason, please email credit_abroad@unc.edu.
