Logging in to campus systems

After being formally admitted to UNC-Chapel Hill and accepting your offer, you will receive instructions and more information on the following items. Please check your email account frequently to ensure no messages are missed, thoroughly review all instructions, and take action in a timely manner.

ConnectCarolina

ConnectCarolina is an integrated system that provides students with access to all things related to UNC-Chapel Hill. ConnectCarolina will allow students to pay their bills, access course information, review accommodation options, upload important registration documents, and more. Access to ConnectCarolina will be granted once your Onyen and PID (outlined below) are created as part of your registration.

Onyen

“Onyen” is the name for UNC’s campus-wide identifier that you can use to gain access to various electronic resources on campus. Although it is a word, you can think of it as an acronym for the “only name you’ll ever need.” Your Onyen and password are your keys to everything you need during your UNC-Chapel Hill exchange term(s). It is important that you keep your password safe and secure for security purposes, as your personal information is linked to your Onyen and password. Onyens are the electronic service identifiers available to all members of the campus community — faculty, staff, and students alike and are associated with a person via their PID. Also, each Onyen has its own password which can be used over secure connections for encrypted sessions to Web and other servers across campus.

OneCard

This card is your Student Identification and has many different purposes. It functions as your library card, your admission to athletic events, your access to the gyms, and your printing card. If you live on-campus, it is the card you put money on to do your laundry, and it is the card you use in the dining hall if you purchase a meal plan. Regardless of where you reside, you can put money on your OneCard to spend on food, books, clothing, and other items purchased on campus.

PID

The Person ID Number (PID) is an identification number assigned to all persons with a university relationship, as defined by an official university department. This number is designed to give all persons a universal number (PID or Person ID) that is unique to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The number is nine-digits long and is unique to each student, staff, and faculty member at UNC. You will most likely end up memorizing your PID, as you’ll use it in all correspondence with instructors. This PID is also printed on your OneCard.

Email

As a UNC student, you have an official email account that instructors, advisors, and academic departments will use to communicate directly with you. This email is called Heel Mail, and you can access your email using your Onyen and password at heelmail.unc.edu. Your official email address for this account is your onyen at live.unc.edu. For example, if your onyen is leesoo, your email address is leesoo@live.unc.edu.
