For UNC-CH undergraduates, spend anywhere from 2 to 4 semesters at the National University of Singapore, and receive a joint Bachelor of Arts Degree from both institutions in: Economics, English Literature, Geography, History, or Political Science. While at NUS, Carolina Students will pay UNC tuition and fees. At the same time, NUS students will be able to spend 2 to 4 semesters at UNC and receive the joint degree.
Qualified UNC-CH students will have at least a 3.3 GPA and can apply for the joint degree starting in the second semester of their Freshman year until the second semester of their Junior year. Each UNC joint degree student can decide on their own how many semesters (between 2 and 4) and at which point in their undergraduate career they would like to study at NUS, as long as it is after their Freshman year at Carolina.
In addition to the regular support given to exchange students at NUS, the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Matters in the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) will act as academic advisor for our students. For each semester you are at NUS, you will take a full load of courses, primarily in your major field of study, but you are also welcome to select from other offerings at FASS and other faculties at NUS as well.
A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for graduation. They are constituted by a total of 60 hours in the major (including as many as 6-12 hours of honors work if applicable) and 45 hours of general education requirements. The remaining 15 hours are comprised of electives, the supplemental general education requirement (either distributive or integrative option) and possibly one minor. All general education and graduation requirements of both UNC-Chapel Hill and NUS must be met. A detailed listing of the requirements for both schools and how to satisfy those requirements will be available soon at the UNC study abroad office. Students will receive credit for courses according to each university's respective system of assigning and classifying credit hours or MCs, as applicable. The full academic transcript of the course work completed by students in the joint degree programme will be maintained by the home university (UNC-Chapel Hill for Carolina students).
Undergraduate students at UNC-Chapel Hill will be restricted to a single major in the joint degree program but may be allowed (in some circumstances) to complete one minor.
All criteria for distinction and highest distinction, eligibility for Phi Beta Kappa and other honorary societies, and for graduation with honors and highest honors are in effect. Students in the joint degree program interested in pursuing graduation with honors or highest honors within their major department at UNC-Chapel Hill should consult with the departmental honors advisor as early as possible, especially if they plan to be in residence at NUS during their entire senior year. An additional 6 credit hours of honors research and preparation may be added to the usual 6 hours for a total of 12 hours of honors coursework, commensurate with the 12 hour dissertation requirement for undergraduates at NUS. These hours, between 6 and 12, can constitute part of the required coursework in the major.
